Brandix powers Kelaniya contingent to University Games


--Sri Lanka’s apparel powerhouse, Brandix will sponsor a contingent of exceptional undergraduate athletes from the University of Kelaniya to participate at the ‘Olympic Games of the Academic World’, the prestigious World University Games (Universiade) 2007--

Eight students of the Kelaniya University who have been selected by the Sri Lanka University Sports Association to be part of the 45 member squad representing Sri Lanka, will vie for honours in track and field events, badminton, javelin throw and taekwando at the 24th Universiade organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from August 8th to 18th.

The sponsorship package will cover the food, lodging and registration fee requirements of six of the athletes. Two others have already received full sponsorship under the FISU Financial Aid programme for exceptional sporting achievements.

More than 200 countries will field undergraduate athletes at this year’s games. Participants from the Kelaniya University will include J. S. S. Perera (Track and Field), Ms. P. G. S. K. Nandasiri (Badminton), H. A. D. H. Perera (Javelin Throw), Ms. D. Abeysekara (Taekondo), Ms. K. N. S. Kumari (Track and Field), Ms. K. P. C. M. Karunanayake (Track and Field), Ms. L. T. Malkanthi (Track and Field) and Ms. H. K. S. S. Hemakumara (Track and Field).

The sponsorship cheque from Brandix was presented to the Kelaniya University’s Dayani Abeysekera by Brandix Chief People’s Officer Nigel Forbes.

“Brandix has always endeavoured to support young Sri Lankans in their pursuit of excellence and we are proud to be associated with one of Sri Lanka’s leading national universities, which has produced some outstanding sports personalities,” said Anusha Alles, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Brandix.

Two of Sri Lanka’s most accomplished sportsmen, fast bowler Lasith Malinga and weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage are also supported by Brandix, Sri Lanka’s largest apparel exporter.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony of the sponsorship cheque Professor Sarath Kulatunga, Chairman Sports Advisory Board, University of Kelaniya said: “Brandix is one of the most respected groups of companies in Sri Lanka and South Asia. We are greatly encouraged by this gesture of support and are proud to acknowledge Brandix as our sponsor for Universiade 2007.”

Brandix pioneered the concept of total solutions in the Sri Lankan apparel industry and is Sri Lanka’s largest apparel exporter with a consolidated annual turnover of over US$ 320 million. The Group’s CSR initiatives are primarily focussed on water, which it uses in large volumes in its manufacturing processes. Brandix has invested Rs 25 million in a training facility and laboratory for water conservation and management in Anuradhapura. Other initiatives include providing water through desalination plants, wells and pipe-borne water to communities in and around the Group’s manufacturing plants. The scope of the Group’s projects has also been extended to encompass sanitation.
