Brandix ties up with Water Resource Board to set up a Center for Disaster Mitigation and Management. Officially named as the Brandix/Water Resource Board Center for Disaster Mitigation and Management, this Center was established to assist the Government of Sri Lanka in its effort of rehabilitation of tsunami victims.

The Center, operational as early as 28 December 2004, deployed field operations teams in six districts - Hambantota, Ampara, Galle , Matara, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. At present, Phase I of the project providing immediate assistance is nearing completion with over 3,500 wells cleaned. Many of these wells were cleaned more than once due to recurring increase in salinity levels. In cases where the pathogen level or salinity level could not be reduced to potable levels despite multiple cleaning efforts, the community was able to use the water for other domestic uses such as washing and sanitation. To areas where the salinity contamination was extreme due to billions of cubic meters of sea water filling the soil cover, drinking water was supplied through alternate means such as distribution from high yielding wells in marginal areas and Reverse Osmosis systems connected near streams to clean brackish water distributed through containers.

Investigations are already underway for supply of water where the permanent resettlement areas have already been identified by the government. Once the locations are identified, assistance will be provided in setting up mini-water supply schemes to these areas under Phase II of the program.

Two desalination plants with an output of 7.5m?/day are soon to be deployed in the coastal areas with more such units to be established in the future providing an entirely new source of water.

Brandix/Water Resource Board Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre - this center will continue to be operational and mobilized to support any drought or flood situations
