Brandix Casualwear, Rideegama and Brandix Intimate Apparel, Welisara shared top honours at the Men's and Women's finals of the 'Brandix Rasadiya Kusalanaya' (Brandix Mercury Trophy) volleyball championship at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on Saturday, 6th April.
The Rideegama team took the Men's trophy beating the Welisara team 22-25, 25-22 and 25-17 in a power-packed final before 5,000 vocal Brandix associates, bringing to a grand climax a tournament conducted in March and April by Sri Lanka's single largest apparel exporter.
The Women's trophy was won by Brandix Intimate Apparel, Welisara, which beat Brandix Casualwear, Rideegama 15-13, 12-15, 15-13 in a closely contested match.
The Brandix Rasadiya Kusalanaya tournament - by far the largest ever conducted by a private sector entity in the country - now in its third year, saw the participation of more than 700 players making up 36 Men's teams and 25 Women's teams representing strategic business units of the Brandix Group in Sri Lanka and India.
"Team work is critical to success in our business and this tournament helps foster unity and team spirit, while encouraging healthy competition," said Colonel Sujith Jayasekara, Group Human Resources Manager of Brandix. "It also promotes an interest in sports and gives thousands of our employees and their families something exciting to look forward to."
Conducted annually for all non-executive associates of the Brandix Group, the Brandix Rasadiya Kusalanaya tournament permitseach business unit to field one Men's and one Women's team, with each team comprising of 10 players and two reserves. Preliminary rounds are conducted at Cluster level after which each Cluster sends one Men's and one Women's champion team to the semi-finals.
